The Ford Explorer will be your trusty steed for all kinds of adventures and terrain. Don’t worry; as off-road-focused as it sounds, this SUV is also perfectly family-friendly. With its spacious interior, powerful engine, and advanced features, the Explorer is a true all-rounder.
Still, let's face it: a brand-new Explorer can set you back a good amount of money, especially if you're eyeing a higher trim. With EchoPark, you can get a used Ford Explorer at a fraction of the original cost.
Here’s everything you need to know about used Ford Explorers.
The Ford Explorer was released in 1991 as a replacement for the three-door Bronco II. It was initially a compact SUV that competed directly against the Jeep Cherokee and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. It featured a traditional swing-away spare tire carrier, which was later replaced with an underfloor location to optimize cargo space usage.
Currently, in the sixth generation, the Explorer is built on the new rear-wheel-drive-based CD6 platform. It has a standard turbocharged 2.3 L EcoBoost inline-four engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer’s maximum tow rating is 5,300 lb.
The Ford Explorer has become a much more sophisticated and capable vehicle since its introduction in 1991. It’s now a very popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The Ford Explorer is available in eight trims:
Here are the six key features of the Ford Explorer.
The Terrain Management System (TMS) in the Ford Explorer was introduced in 2019 in the fifth generation. This system allows drivers to select from multiple drive modes, such as Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, and Trail. This perfectly tailors the vehicle's performance to match different terrains like snow, sand, or mud.
The TMS is available in higher trims such as the ST, Platinum, and Timberline. It’s a great way to improve traction and off-road handling while ensuring a smooth ride on regular roads.
The Power Liftgate feature has been available in the Ford Explorer the fifth generation was introduced in 2019. It gives you easy access to the cargo area with just a push of a button! It’s perfect for anyone who frequently loads and unloads items from their cars.
This feature is standard across all trims, even the base trim.
This feature allows Ford Explorer drivers to connect their smartphones to the car’s infotainment system without the need for any cables. Introduced in 2017 as part of the SYNC 4 infotainment system, it’s now available as standard across all Explorer trims. It’s the perfect way to control your navigation, music, and other entertainment without clunky wires.
The Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control feature has been part of the Explorer line since 2022. This feature allows separate temperature settings for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers. That means you no longer have to fight about it being too hot or cold!
This feature is available in the base, Active, and XLT trims.
The In-Vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot allows your passengers to connect to the internet while on the go. It was introduced in the 2018 Ford Explorer, powered by AT&T's 4G LTE network. Up to ten devices can connect simultaneously, making it perfect for family road trips.
All Ford Explorer trims on models beyond 2020 include In-Vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot as part of the FordPass Connect feature.
However, your Explorer does need to have a monthly AT&T subscription to run this feature, which will cost you around $20 for unlimited data. Initially, new users can activate a complimentary trial period that lasts for three months or until 3GB of data is used, whichever comes first. After this trial period, users can choose to continue with the paid plan.
The Bang & Olufsen (B&O) sound system was first introduced in the 2020 Ford Explorer. It features a standard 12-speaker setup that delivers 780 watts of audio output. The system is designed to create an immersive listening environment with carefully tuned acoustics for maximum clarity and depth.
You’ll find the 12-speaker setup in the Limited trims of the 2023 and 2024 Explorers. However, if you want it in the XLT trim, you can get the XLT Technology Package as an add-on. It includes the 12-speaker system.
If you want a more robust audio experience, the 14-speaker B&O sound system is also available. It includes two additional midrange speakers and runs on a 980-watt amplifier. Plus, you’ll get laser-etched aluminum speaker grilles for even better soundstage capabilities!
The 14-speaker version is standard on both the ST and Platinum trims. However, you can get it as an add-on in the ST-line trim.
The base Active, ST-Line, and Platinum trims run on a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
If you want a more exhilarating drive, the ST trim has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that delivers 400 HP and 415 pound-feet of torque. This powerful V-6 engine is also available as an optional upgrade for the Platinum trim.
All trims include a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, but you can also go for all-wheel drive if you prefer. We also found that the 2025 Explorer's driving experience is remarkably similar to the previous generation. The ride is smooth and composed, and the handling is predictable.
However, the Explorer ST is the way to go if you want a more engaging and sporty driving experience. Its extra power and stiffer suspension make it more thrilling.
The Ford Explorer has multiple safety features as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360™ suite. The suite was first introduced in the 2019 Ford Explorer, including essential features like:
The base trim of the 2025 Explorer, the Active model, comes standard with this suite. Meanwhile, higher trims like the ST-Line and Platinum have advanced versions known as the Ford Co-Pilot360™ Assist+. That includes Adaptive Cruise Control, which can maintain a set speed while keeping a good distance from the vehicle ahead.
The Explorer also started offering Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking in 2020. This feature detects potential collisions and automatically brakes if you don’t respond in time. It’s standard across all 2025 Explorer trims.
